Why Carolyn Needed a Fitness Change
During lockdown, walking alone wasn’t enough anymore.
At 50, Carolyn knew she needed online fitness classes she could do safely at home – mobility work, flexibility training, and strength exercises that would help her with healthy aging (according to the Centers for Disease Control, women older women 40 should focus on exercises that improve balance, flexibility, and bone strength). Carolyn felt traditional gyms were intimidating – with people at different fitness levels – she needed, low-pressure, low-impact workouts that wouldn’t aggravate the arthritus in her knees.
After nearly four years, Carolyn tracks every workout and challenges herself to do 7-10 more sessions each year than the previous year. Not competing with anyone else – just being better than she was before. We hope you enjoy Carolyn’s interview as much as we did!
“Exercise is the most underused natural drug that we have. It does a lot to clear my headspace and help me make better choices. It’s definitely had a massive role in my mental health,”
What made online fitness stick for Carolyn:
No commute or gym anxiety: Work out at home in pajamas with no pressure to “look a certain way”
In session Modification: Steven remembers her knee arthritis and calls out modifications during live sessions
Flexible scheduling: Multiple class times work around her job, family, and Weight Watchers coaching
Supportive community: It felt like I had a personal trainer live on my screen, but yet I was with this wonderful community.
Carolyn’s Favorite Low-Impact Workouts:
Morning Stretch Classes: Reduced arthritis stiffness and improved daily mobility
Dance Fitness: Fun cardio without judgment – “I never thought to dance as part of fitness!”
Chair Fitness: Low-impact strength training perfect for joint-friendly exercise
“Just start. Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can – otherwise you’ll never get it going. Find what suits YOU. You don’t have to run a marathon tomorrow – start with a 15-minute walk.”
